SYMPTOMS

When you use Winnt.exe to run Windows 2000 Setup, you may receive the following message:

Setup did not detect Smartdrive on your computer. SmartDrive will greatly improve the performance of this phase of Windows Setup.
You should exit now, start Smartdrive, and then restart Setup.
Press F3 to exit Setup.
Press ENTER to continue without SmartDrive.

If you then chose to continue, Setup may run very slowly, and may require several hours or a day to complete.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because Winnt.exe does not contain any disk caching. Without disk caching, Setup is slowed substantially.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use the Smartdrv.exe tool for disk caching. To use the Smartdrv.exe tool for disk caching, verify that the following entries exist in the following files, and if needed, add them:
