Error Message Installing Windows 2000 on Hard Disk Formatted with HPFS

SYMPTOMS

When you are installing Windows 2000 on a computer that has OS/2 installed on a hard disk formatted with the HPFS file system, you may receive the following error message:
Disk error

Windows 2000 is installed on a drive formatted with the OS/2 File System (HPFS). Windows 2000 does not support this file system. You must convert this drive to the Windows 2000 File System (NTFS) before upgrading.

CAUSE

HPFS is not a supported file system in Windows 2000. During Windows 2000 Setup, if you format the existing partition without deleting the partition first, you receive the error message.

RESOLUTION

Delete the HPFS partition first during Setup, before creating and formatting a partition using the FAT or NTFS file system.
