Kernel Exception on Dell PowerEdge 6350 Server with Adaptec 294x SCSI Adapter

SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows 2000 on a Dell PowerEdge 6350 server with an Adaptec 294x SCSI controller and you have Windows 2000 configured for IMAP4, POP3, and SMTP, you may receive the following kernel exception error message after the server is under load for 30 minutes or more:
"THIS HANDLE IS PRIVILEGED" - exception number 000006ba

CAUSE

This error message occurs when the PCI bus encounters a time-out caused by the Adaptec 294x SCSI controller.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use any of the following methods:
  • Update to the latest BIOS for the Dell PowerEdge 6350 that works around the time-out issue.
  • Update to the latest SCSI BIOS for the Adaptec 294x SCSI controller that fixes the time-out issue.
