Works 2000 Error Message: The MAPI Configuration File MAPISVC.INF Is Not Found...

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to send an e-mail message or a fax from the Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor, you may receive the following error message:
The following unrecoverable error has occurred:

The MAPI configuration file MAPISVC.INF is not found in the system subdirectory of the Windows directory. Reinstall Windows Messaging.
When you click Finish, the following error message appears:
No profiles have been created. To create a new profile, use the Mail and Fax icon in the Control Panel.
When you open Control Panel, the Mail and Fax icon is not present.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You are running Works 2000 on a Microsoft Windows 95-based computer.
  • Windows Messaging is not installed on the computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install Windows Messaging:

  1. Quit all programs that are running on your computer.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  5. In the Components box, click to select the Windows Messaging check box.
  6. Click Apply. If you are prompted to insert the Windows 95 CD-ROM, do so.
  7. Follow the instructions in the Inbox Setup Wizard to complete the installation of Windows Messaging.
