Incorrect Number of Fax Jobs in Printers Folder View

When you view a fax printer in the Printers folder, the number of fax jobs listed may be zero, or may be twice the number of jobs that are actually queued (depending on the status of the fax printer).

In Windows 2000, a cover page is rendered and printed by the spooler for each fax job in the queue. However, the cover page is merged with the associated fax job by the Fax service, which receives the rendered jobs from the Spooler service.

This behavior is by design.

There are two scenarios under which this behavior can occur:

• Because the spooler has to render the cover page and the document to be faxed separately, you see the count as double in the in the Printers folder if the queue is paused. This behavior occurs because the Fax service has not yet received the two separate documents from the Spooler service; they are in the queue. If you check the print spooler folder (%SystemRoot%\System32\Spool\Printers), you see two files (.shd and .spl) for each job.
• If the jobs have been rendered by the spooler and passed to the fax queue, but have not been faxed yet, you see no jobs in the Printers folder. However, when you open the queue, you see the correct number of jobs.

This condition occurs even if you do not select the option to send a cover page.
