SYMPTOMS

When you are installing Windows 2000 from CD-ROM, Text-mode Setup searches for pre-existing installations. If Setup locates any installations of Windows 2000, it prompts you to either repair the installations or continue with a fresh installation. In some cases, you may see "(mirror):\%SystemRoot%" listed as one of the pre-existing installations. The correct format is Drive:\Winnt, where Drive is the letter of the drive on which Windows 2000 is installed.

CAUSE

Text-mode Setup assumes that a partition is a mirror if the partition does not have a drive letter. This may occur because the installation is on removable media.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
