ComputerName Key and Unattended Upgrades to Windows 2000 Professional

When you perform an unattended upgrade from Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 to Windows 2000, the ComputerName key in the [UserData] section of the Unattend.txt file can produce different results, depending on which operating system you are upgrading and how it is used in your deployment strategy.

Note that the information contained in the Unattend.doc file about the ComputerName key refers to behavior that occurs with a clean installation of Windows 2000, not not an upgrade.

Windows 95/Windows 98

• The presence of the ComputerName key (for example, "ComputerName = *") generates a random name for the computer.
• To keep the same computer name in Windows 2000 as in Windows 95/Windows 98, omit the ComputerName key from the answer file.

Windows NT Workstation 4.0

• The presence of the ComputerName key has no effect. The name of the computer remains the same after the Windows 2000 upgrade no matter what the ComputerName key is set to.
