Random Files May Not Be Copied During Text-Mode Setup

When you install Windows, you may receive a message during text-mode Setup that states that a file cannot be copied because it is damaged or missing. If you attempt to skip the file, you may receive the same message for random files that Setup tries to copy to your hard disk. Retrying a file may or may not work, but the process continues to stop on subsequent files.

This behavior can occur because of any of the following reasons:

• The Windows CD-ROM is damaged or dirty.
• PC133 SDRAM is being used in a computer that requires PC100 SDRAM.
• The CD-ROM drive is malfunctioning.
• The RAM is mismatched or the memory is faulty.

To resolve this issue, use the following troubleshooting methods in the order in which they are listed. After you attempt each method, test to see if the issue is resolved.

Clean the CD-ROM

Clean the Windows CD-ROM to remove fingerprints, smudges, and dust (any of these things can cause read problems on CD-ROMs). To clean the Windows CD-ROM, gently wipe the silver side of the CD-ROM with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth. Do not use paper cloth, which can scratch the plastic or leave streaks.

NOTE: Wipe the CD-ROM using a linear motion from the center of the disc outward. Do not use a circular motion.

Check Your Computer's RAM

Ensure that the RAM on your motherboard is the correct type of RAM suggested by the manufacturer of the motherboard.

If you are using PC133 RAM with a motherboard designed for PC100 RAM, replace the PC133 RAM with PC100 RAM.

Check Your CD-ROM Drive

A malfunctioning CD-ROM drive that appeared to work well before the installation, may show its defects during the installation of Windows. If possible, try using another CD-ROM drive for the installation.
