XFOR: How to Create and Configure a Microsoft Mail Connector in Exchange 2000

Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and Microsoft Mail must be configured for the message transfer agent (MTA) to transfer mail. This article guides you through the basic setup.

Microsoft Mail Configuration

If Microsoft Mail needs to be configured, use the following steps to set up a Microsoft Mail server:

1. Start the Microsoft Mail Administrator program, Admin.exe.
2. Choose External-Admin, and then choose Create. You receive a prompt for the following information:
   Enter Network Name: Exchange 2000 Server's Network
   Enter Postoffice Name: Exchange 2000 Server's Postoffice
   Select Route Type: Direct or Indirect
   Direct Connection Via: MS-DOS Drive, Modem, or X.25
   • If you chose MS-DOS Drive, you also need the network, and postoffice name.
   • If you choose Modem, you also need to supply information for the following fields:
     MSMAIL Network
     MSMAIL Postoffice
     Sign-on id
     Password
     Telephone number
   • If you select X.25, you also need to supply information for the following fields:
     MSMAIL Network
     MSMAIL Postoffice
     Sign-on id
     Password
     X.121 Address

Exchange 2000

To install the Microsoft Exchange Connector for Microsoft Mail, first follow these steps before proceeding further:

1. Run Exchange 2000 Setup.
2. Click Change under Microsoft Exchange 2000.
3. Click Install under Microsoft Exchange MSMAIL Connector.
4. Complete the setup.

After you have installed the Microsoft Exchange MSMAIL Connector, perform the following steps to establish mail flow on the Exchange 2000 side:

1. Start Exchange System Manager, and locate the Connectors container under the Administrative Group or Routing Group container.
2. Open the Connector for MSMAIL Properties.
3. On the Interchange tab, select a user for the administrator's mailbox.
4. On the Connection tab, create a postoffice definition from the following four choices: LAN, Async, X.25, and Indirect.
   • If you select LAN, you need the full universal naming convention (UNC) path and logon credential information to the Microsoft Mail postoffice.
   • If you select Async, you need information for the fields MSMAIL Network, MSMAIL Postoffice, Sign-on id, Password, and Telephone Number.
   • If you select X.25, you need information for the fields MSMAIL Network, MSMAIL Postoffice, Sign-on id, Password, and X.121 Address.
   • The Indirect option is not available until you define at least one direct route.

Message Transfer Agent

Mail can be transferred between Exchange 2000 and Microsoft Mail only with the aid of the Microsoft Mail (PC) MTA (PCMTA). You must create and start this service for mail to flow. Use the following steps to create and configure the message transfer agent PCMTA.

1. In Exchange System Manager, open the properties for "Connector for MS Mail."
2. Click the Connector MTA tab.
3. Click New, and then create your MTA service.
4. On the Connector MTA tab, under Postoffice Serviced, click List, and then add the postoffice you want this MTA to send mail to and receive mail from.
