FP2000: Error Message When You Open or Create a New Web

When you attempt to open or create a new Microsoft FrontPage web, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

This behavior can occur if you edit your server-based local copy of your web as a disk-based web at C:\\Inetpub\Wwwroot\Webname

where Webname is the name of your web.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Back up your original web content to the desktop. You can use the publishing feature in FrontPage to make a copy or a backup of your site.
   
   To back up your Web, follow these steps:
   
   
   1. Open your web, and then on the File menu, click Publish Web.
   2. In the Specify the location to publish your Web to drop-down list, type the path of a directory on your hard disk or on a network drive, and then click Publish. FrontPage then copies the files to that location, maintaining all of the proper links.
   
   
2. Uninstall Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS).
3. Delete the Inetpub and the Inetsrv folders.
4. Reinstall Personal Web Server.
5. Reinstall Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions.
6. Move all of the backup webs from the desktop into the new Inetpub\Wwwroot folder.
   
   You can use the publishing feature in FrontPage again to do this.
   
   To restore your web, follow these steps:
   1. On the File menu, click Open Web.
   2. Locate the web that you backed up, and then click Open.
   3. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
   4. In the Specify the location to publish your Web to drop-down list, type the path of your web-publishing directory for IIS. (The default web-publishing directory provided by the Personal Web Server Setup, also called the home directory, is Inetpub\wwwroot.)
   5. Click Publish. FrontPage copies the files to that location, maintaining all of the proper links.
