SYMPTOMS

After you install Terminal Services from Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a computer that is running Windows 2000 Server SP1 without Terminal Services and Terminal Services Licensing installed, and then uninstall Windows 2000 SP1, the following Terminal Services files are not replaced:
  • Conman.exe
  • Mstsce.exe
  • Tsctrc.dll
  • Iserver.exe

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the Terminal Services files did not exist before you installed Windows 2000 SP1. Removing Windows 2000 SP1 does not alter Terminal Service files because they are components that are added after the service pack installation, and uninstalling the service pack does not affect components that are added after the service pack installation.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem and restore your operating system back to its original state, uninstall all of the programs and components you installed between the time you first installed service pack 1 and the time you uninstalled service pack 1.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
