XADM: How to Install Only the Active Directory Connector Microsoft Management Console

When you attempt to install the Exchange 2000 Server Active Directory Connector (ADC), you may receive the following error message:

This behavior can occur if you are not logged on as a member of the Enterprise Administrators group when you attempt to isntall Exchange 2000 ADC. This behavior occurs even if you only want to install the ADC Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in to administer ADC connections from a computer on which the ADC is not installed.

To install the Exchange 2000 ADC MMC snap-in on a Windows 2000 Server-based computer on which Exchange 2000 ADC is not installed:

1. On the Exchange 2000 Server installation media, open the Adc\I386 folder.
2. Copy the Adcadmin.dll file, the Exchmem.dll file, and the Pttrace.dll file (if present) from the Adc\I386 folder to the Winnt\System32 folder on your Windows 2000 Server-based computer.
3. Open a command prompt.
4. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:
   regsvr32 adcadmin.dll
5. When you receive the following message, click OK:
   DllRegisterServer in c:\winnt\system32\adcadmin.dll succeeded.
6. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER.

To use the Exchange 2000 ADC MMC:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type MMC, and then click OK.
3. In MMC, click Console, click Add/Remove Snap-in, and then click Add.
4. Click Active Directory Connector, and then click Add.
5. Click Close, and then click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

Before you can administer ADC connections from a computer that the ADC is not installed on, the computer must be a member of the forest that you want to administer.
