This article discusses how to obtain the Windows Installer package file (Update.msi) for Windows 2000 service packs.

Using Windows Installer Service, the Windows Installer Package (Update.msi) allows you to streamline the deployment and maintenance of service packs from a network.
The Windows Installer package file (Update.msi) contains all of the information that is required to install or uninstall the service pack by using the IntelliMirror management technologies in Windows 2000.
Microsoft recommends the Update.msi package for system administrators and other advanced users.
This installation method assumes that you have a basic understanding of the Windows Installer service, and a working knowledge of Group Policy and Active Directory.

The Windows Installer package file (Update.exe) for Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) is available in the self-extracting .EXE that contains the rest of the service pack. Perform the following steps to extract Update.exe:

Obtain Windows 2000 SP3
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/2000/bb735341.aspx)

Type the following at a Command Prompt to extract the contents of SP3:
<fullpath>\w2kSP3 -x

Service Pack 2

The Windows Installer package file (Update.exe) for Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is available in the self-extracting .EXE that contains the rest of the service pack. Perform the following steps to extract Update.exe:

Obtain Windows 2000 SP2

Type the following at a Command Prompt to extract the contents of SP2:
<fullpath>\w2kSP2 -x

Obtain Windows 2000 SP1
(http://download.microsoft.com/download/win2000platform/sp/sp1/nt5/en-us/sp1sym.exe)

Type the following at a Command Prompt to extract the contents of SP1:
<fullpath>\sp1express -x
or
<fullpath>\sp1network -x
