SYMPTOMS

A Windows 2000 service pack 1 may overwrite third-party drivers without prompting.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • The name of the third-party driver is the same as the Windows 2000 driver.
  • You do not specify the -o option to overwrite Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) files without prompting.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
