SYMPTOMS

When you use the Dcpromo.exe tool to install Active Directory, the following error message may be displayed:
Active Directory installation failed: The network location could not be reached.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the server's network adapter is not securely attached to a hub nor to a switch with a network cable.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must ensure that the server's network adapter is firmly connected to a hub or to a switch with a network cable.

If the above does not work attempt this:

Ensure the network cable is plugged in and IP connectivity is established.Uninstalled the following Protocols and services from the problem server:
File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks.Client for Microsoft Networks.TCP/IP.
Reboot youyr computer, reinstall the above applications.

The status of the server's network adapter can be obtained if you run IPConfig at the command prompt. If the server's network adapter is disconnected, the following message may be displayed:
Media State: Cable Disconnected
