"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error" error message when you forward a message in Outlook 2000 SR-1

Symptoms

When you try to forward a message in Microsoft Outlook 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1), you may receive the following error message:
The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook.

Cause

This behavior occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • Your default delivery location is set to a Personal Folder (.pst) file or you are using Offline Folders (an .ost file).
  • You forward a message in Outlook Rich Text format (RTF) that includes an attachment.
  • You enable the message to be saved in the Drafts folder either by waiting for three minutes or by clicking Save on the File menu.
  • You modify the message after you save a copy in the Drafts folder.
  • You try to send the message or save the message by clicking Save on the File menu.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
