WINS Manager Does Not Display All Reservations in a Mixed Environment

SYMPTOMS

If you are running both Windows 2000-based and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based WINS servers, the following error message may appear when you display registrations by owner:

WINS encountered an error during the operation

When this occurs, not all of the entries are displayed.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a change from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 in how IDs for WINS entries are assigned.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use Winscl.exe to display registrations by owner.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
