SYMPTOMS

Windows 2000-based Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) clients support DHCP Class ID options. You can configure this feature by using Ipconfig.exe command-line switches or by specifying a DhcpClassId value in your unattended installation script. However, if you configure this during unattended installation, the DhcpClassId option is not sent to the DHCP server, but can be seen with Ipconfig.

CAUSE

The DHCP client requires a registry setting (in addition to the DhcpClassId setting) that is not created by unattended Setup. The hotfix that is described in this article creates this registry setting dynamically on the DHCP client.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
