"Stop 0x0000001E KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" Error Message May Be Displayed When You Use the Diskperf Utility

After you have installed Terminal Services on Windows 2000 or you have upgraded from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server to Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message on a blue screen: NOTE: Address F25007E9 has a base at F2500000, and the date stamp is 37f400b0-Diskperf.sys.

The computer boots into either Safe mode or Safe mode with Networking. However, if the computer boots into Safe mode and you have disabled the Diskperf utility (by means of Control Panel), you may receive a "Stop 0x0000007b" message.

This behavior can occur because the Diskperf utility (Diskperf.sys) controls the types of counters that can be viewed when you use the System Monitor tool. By default, the computer is set to collect physical drive data. However, logical drive data is not collected by default, you must enable it specifically.

If you disable the disk performance counters by using the -n switch, and then you re-enable all of the performance counters by using the -y switch, you cannot return to the default state where the physical drive data is collected. In this particular scenario, the use of additional performance counters, other than the default, has caused the blue screen to be displayed on the computer.

To resolve this behavior, boot the computer into Safe mode, and then at a command prompt, type: diskperf -n. Then, you can restart the computer normally. However, any disk performance monitoring is disabled.

To return to the normal operation where only physical drive data is collected, refer to the switch options that are available for the Diskperf utility by typing: diskperf /? at a command prompt.
