SYMPTOMS

When you use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, the Home or small network option may be unavailable.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the two computers you want to work with are not on the same subnet. When the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard initializes, the computer that contains the files and settings that are being migrated uses a broadcast to find the Windows XP-based computer. Because broadcasts are not routable, the two computers must be on the same subnet.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
  • Click the Other option in the the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard so you can place the files and settings on a computer on the network that both computers can connect to.
  • Change the subnet for one of the computers so that both computers use the same subnet.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
