Article ID: 308214 - Last Review: February 28, 2007 - Revision: 3.3 Computer Stops Responding or Stop Error Occurs When Scsiport.sys Requests Memory AllocationThis article was previously published under Q308214 SYMPTOMS
When the SCSI port driver (the Scsiport.sys file) makes a memory allocation request, your computer may stop responding (hang) or the Memory Manager may quit, and you receive the following error on a blue screen:
Stop 0x000000D8 DRIVER_USED_EXCESSIVE_PTES
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Compaq miniport driver allocates and frees the memory descriptor lists many times, resulting in fragmentation of the page table entries (PTEs). When a driver requests memory allocation, the Memory Manager cannot allocate a contiguous block of memory. If the driver (the Scsiport.sys file) cannot recover or cannot handle a limited resource condition, the Memory Manager quits and an error occurs.
