XCCC: Adding Attachments to Public Folder Posts in OWA

In Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later, you can use Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) to add an attachment to a post.

In the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Exchange 2000, you cannot use OWA to add an attachment to a post to a public folder. When you create a new post to the public folder, no Attachment button is available on the toolbar. However, you can work around this limitation. In Exchange 2000 Server SP1 and later, an Attachment button is also available on the toolbar when you create a new post for a public folder.

After you install Exchange 2000 SP1 or later, posts without attachments remain unchanged; they are committed directly to the public folder.

However, when you create a new post to a public folder in Exchange 2000 SP1 and later, if that post contains an attachment, a special folder is created to hold the post with the attachment while you are composing the new post. When you click the Attachment button, the post is staged to the OWAScratchPadMDB_GUID folder (where MDB_GUID is the Messaging Database globally unique identifier), where the post remains during composition.

When the post is committed, it is moved to the original public folder.

To view the OWAScratchPad folder during composition:

1. Start Exchange System Manager.
2. Expand the Organization object, expand the Administrative Groups object, and then expand the administrative_group_name object.
3. Expand the Folders object, right-click Public Folders, and then click View System Folders.

By default, there is a 1 megabyte (MB) limit on an OWAScratchPad folder, which limits the size of attachments when you use OWA to post an item with an attachment.
