When you try to upgrade from Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation to Windows XP Professional, you may receive the following error message:
Setup cannot upgrade your current installation to Windows XP. Your copy of Windows XP does not support upgrading from an evaluation copy of Windows. Setup cannot continue.
CAUSE
Although the error message indicates that you are running an evaluation version of Windows, this is not the case when you are trying to upgrade from Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, or Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. There are no evaluation versions of these versions of Windows from Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) channels. This error message may occur if the Windows XP Professional CD-ROM that you are using to upgrade is designed to upgrade only an OEM version of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.
RESOLUTION
Contact the OEM that supplied the Windows XP Professional CD-ROM to obtain an upgrade CD-ROM that can upgrade Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, or Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.
