Slow or Delayed Screen Updates After Reconnecting to Console Session

After you connect to the console session on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer by using the Remote Desktop client, screen updates may be delayed, and the computer may seem to be unresponsive. Right-clicking the desktop can force delayed updates to appear.
This problem should occur only if a specific Win32 function (EnumDisplaySettings) is called while a previous RDP session to the console is disconnected.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
When this problem occurs, the computer does not seem to be affected in any other way (for example, CPU usage is typical). You can clear the condition with an interactive logon (at the physical console).
To determine if this problem is occurring, start a command prompt and type some characters. If the problem is occurring, the characters appear only after you right-click the desktop.
The Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Inventory agent uses the Win32_DisplayControllerConfiguration and Win32_VideoController WMI classes. These WMI classes use the affected function. Because the agent runs regularly in the background (as a service), it triggers the problem if a remote console session is left disconnected.
