In Windows XP with SP1, in Windows 2000 with SP3, and in previous versions of these products, you cannot install driver updates from the Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install driver updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or from the Microsoft Update Web site, the installation may not succeed. This is a problem if you are running Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (SP1), Window 2000 with Service Pack 3 (SP3), or previous versions of these products.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you have lots of INF files in your %windir%\Inf folder. In this case, Windows incorrectly searches the whole INF folder for information about which drivers to update instead of searching only for currently installed drivers.
