Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry SYMPTOMSAfter you install Internet Explorer 5 or later, the
automatic configuration and proxy setting information for each connection may
be separate from the same information that is used for the Local Area Network
(LAN) connection. CAUSEThis problem occurs because in Internet Explorer 5 or later,
each connection uses its own automatic configuration and proxy
settings. RESOLUTIONA supported hotfix is
now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem
that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are
experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing.
Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that
you wait for the next Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack (SP) that contains this
hotfix. To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support
(http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question. This new functionality is different from earlier versions of Internet Explorer. Because you may require the automatic configuration or proxy settings of your connections to be the same as the LAN settings, Microsoft has provided a supported design-change "fix." You can use this "fix" to set all the automatic configuration and proxy settings of your connections (that are blank or not set for each connection) to the LAN settings. The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel. Note The following fix is specifically for Internet Explorer 5.01 (post SP 2) on Windows 2000 SP 3. The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later: Date Time Version Size File name ------------------------------------------------------- 14-Apr-2003 19:48 5.0.3517.1400 461,072 Wininet.dll The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later: Date Time Version Size File name ------------------------------------------------------- 03-Mar-2003 17:24 6.0.2800.1172 33,792 Ieuninst.exe 09-Mar-2003 08:42 6.0.2800.1173 26,624 Ieupdate.exe 11-Apr-2003 18:20 6.0.2800.1187 585,728 Wininet.dll STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
in the "Applies to" section. MORE INFORMATIONWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
This hotfix now checks for the DialupUseLanSettings flag in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE first, and then under HKEY_CURRENT_USER. It uses the first enabled value that it finds. The flag is set under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE for a per-machine setting and under HKEY_CURRENT_USER for a per-user setting. Note You only have to set this flag in one location, either HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_CURRENT_USER. To correctly implement this fix, add a new DWORD value named DialupUseLanSettings with a data value of 1 under one of the following registry subkeys, depending on the method you want to use: per-computer or per-user. For HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: For IEAK builds, you must also modify the
DialupUseLanSettings DWORD value under the following registry
key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings For HKEY_CURRENT_USER: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
