SUMMARY

Guests in Microsoft Zoo Tycoon want to sit when they are tired, to buy food when they are hungry, and to use the restrooms when it is necessary. Guests become unhappy when their requirements are not met. If the buildings and objects are not conveniently located or if the buildings and objects are facing the wrong way to be accessible, the guests cannot use them. The Zoo Tycoon update prevents issues in new zoos, but it does not fix zoos that are already in use. Some third-party facilities may cause similar issues that you can fix by removing Zoo Tycoon, deleting the original folder, and then reinstalling Zoo Tycoon.

SYMPTOMS

When you are playing a game of Zoo Tycoon, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • Your guests are hungry, unhappy, and want to use the restrooms.
  • You have restaurants, snack stands, and restrooms built, but none of the guests are using them.
  • Your guests stand next to benches and picnic tables, but do not sit down even when they are tired.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
  • You did not install the Zoo Tycoon update before you started the zoo.
  • The buildings that the guests want are not spread across the zoo.
  • The buildings that the guests want are not accessible.
  • You have added third-party stands or restrooms in the zoo.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they appear.

Method 1: Install the Zoo Tycoon update

If you have the Microsoft Zoo Tycoon: Dinosaur Digs expansion pack that installs the update, go to the next method.

Note After you install the update, the update only applies to new zoos. Any saved zoos that were created before the update will continue to show the symptoms that are described in the "Symptoms" section.

Method 2: Add new buildings

Create new restrooms and snack stands in different parts of the park. Rotate the buildings before you position them so that the front of the building is on a path and is easily accessible.

Method 3: Remove third-party add-ins

If you have installed third-party restrooms, food stands, or drink stands, the Zoo Tycoon files may be damaged. To resolve this problem, remove, and then reinstall Zoo Tycoon. To do so, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Part 1: Remove Zoo Tycoon

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Repeat the following steps for Dinosaur Digs and Microsoft Zoo Tycoon: Marine Mania Expansion Pack:
    1. In the Currently installed programs list, click Zoo Tycoon - Dinosaur Digs, and then click Change/Remove.
    2. Click Uninstall, and then click OK.
    3. Click OK when you receive the message that Zoo Tycoon - Dinosaur Digs was removed.
  4. Click Start, and then click Search.
  5. In the All or part of the file name box, type zoo tycoon.
  6. In the Look in box, click the drive where Zoo Tycoon was installed, and then click Search.
  7. In the search results window, right-click the Zoo Tycoon folder, and then click Delete.

When you are prompted to do so, click Yes to confirm the deletion.

Part 2: Restart the computer by using a clean-boot procedure

Use a clean boot procedure to restart your computer. A clean boot procedure is a way to create a clean environment. When you start your computer by using a clean boot procedure, Microsoft Windows starts and loads only basic devices and services.

To restart your computer by using a clean boot procedure, follow the steps that are appropriate for your operating system.

Microsoft Windows XP
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig , and then click OK.
  3. Click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
  4. Click to clear the following check boxes under Selective Startup:
    • Process System.ini file
    • Process Win.ini file
    • Load Startup Items
  5. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  6. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer.
Note To restore the computer to use a normal startup, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services on the General tab in the System Configuration Utility, click OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. Click the General tab, and then click Selective startup.
  4. Click to clear all the check boxes under Selective startup.
  5. On the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box, and then click OK.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
  6. After the computer restarts, click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.

Important Look closely at the General tab to verify that the check boxes that you cleared are still cleared. If you see a selected, unavailable check box (it appears dimmed and has a check mark in it), your computer is not truly "clean-booted," and you may require assistance from the manufacturer of the program that is listed next to the selected, unavailable check box.
Note To restore the computer to use a normal startup, click Normal Startup on the General tab in the System Configuration Utility, click OK, and then restart the computer.

Microsoft Windows 98
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.
  2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.
  3. Click the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process Config.sys file
    • Process Autoexec.bat file
    • Process Winstart.bat file (if available)
    • Process Win.ini file
    • Load Startup group items
  4. Click OK, and then restart the computer.
Note To restore the computer to use a normal startup, click Normal Startup on the General tab in the System Configuration Utility, click OK, and then restart the computer.

Part 3: Reinstall Zoo Tycoon

To reinstall Zoo Tycoon, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Zoo Tycoon CD-ROM in the computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.

    3. Click OK.
  2. Follow the instructions to install Zoo Tycoon.

Part 4: Reinstall Dinosaur Digs or Marine Mania, or both

To reinstall the Dinosaur Digs Expansion Pack, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Zoo Tycoon: Dinosaur Digs Expansion Pack CD-ROM or Zoo Tycoon: Marine Mania Expansion Pack CD-ROM in the computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive.

If the Setup program does not start automatically, follow these steps:
