Symptoms

When you try to visit a Web site that uses an internationalized domain name (IDN), you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:

The page cannot be displayed

There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed.

Please try the following:
  • Click the Refresh button, or try again later.
  • Open the www.widgets-inc-10.com home page, and then look for links to the information you want.
  • If you believe you should be able to view this directory or page, please contact the Web site administrator by using the e-mail address or phone number listed on the www.widgets-inc-10.com home page.

Cause

This issue occurs because versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer earlier than version 7 do not support IDNs. IDNs uses non-ASCII characters. Internet Explorer 6 and earlier versions cannot resolve a URL whose domain name contains non-ASCII characters.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, upgrade to Internet Explorer 7. If you are unable or unwilling to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7, you may install a third-party program to support IDNs.
