SYMPTOMS

When you use a direct connection to a security-enhanced Web site, you may receive the following error message in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1:
Page cannot be displayed
This problem may occur when you click a hyperlink in a Microsoft Office document that opens a security-enhanced Web page.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Registry Information

You must modify the registry to use this hotfix. After you apply this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
  3. Right-click the registry key that you located in step 2, click New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FeatureControl for the name of the new subkey, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click FeatureControl, click New, and then click Key.
  6. Type FEATURE_AUTO_REFRESH_ON_NON_CACHABLE_OFFICE_LINKS_KB843286 for the name of the new subkey, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click the subkey that you created in step 6, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
  8. Type Iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  9. Right-click Iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  10. In the Value box, type 00000001, and then click OK.
  11. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following procedures:
  • After you receive the "Page cannot be displayed" error message, click Refresh in Internet Explorer to view the Office document.
  • In Internet Explorer, turn off Show friendly HTTP error messages. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Internet Explorer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    3. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
    4. On the Advanced tab, click to clear the Show friendly HTTP error messages check box, and then click OK.
