Symptoms

When you log on to a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer and then start Microsoft Money 2003 or Microsoft Money 2004, you may receive the following error message:
The new file 'C:\Documents and Settings\Guest\My Documents\My Money2.mny' cannot be created. Please check for one of the following problems:
  • The filename cannot contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? " < > |.
  • The file cannot be created on a disk that is write-protected or does not have enough disk space.
  • You cannot replace a file that is currently open.

Cause

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2.
  • You use Fast User Switching to switch from the Administrator account to the Guest account.
  • You logged on to the computer by using an account that is a member of the Guests group and you try to start Money for the first time.

Workaround

To work around this issue, log on by using an account that is a member of either the Administrators group or the Power Users group. A limited user account or a Guest account does not have sufficient permission to use Money.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
