Symptoms

Consider this scenario. You try to use Veritas Backup Exec to back up a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer from a remote Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer that has the Active Directory directory service installed. In this scenario, you receive an error message that is similar to the following, where ServerName is the name of the Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer:
Logon account 'System Logon Account' failed to access '<ServerName>'. The item was not found

Cause

This issue occurs if the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) is enabled on the Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Configure an exception in Group Policy

  1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Under Local Computer Policy, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Network, expand Network Connections, and then expand Windows Firewall.
  3. In the left pane, click Domain Profile, and then double-click Windows Firewall: Define program exceptions.
  4. Click Enabled, and then click Show.
  5. Click Add, type %ProgramFiles%\Veritas\RANT\beremote.exe, and then click OK.

    Note The path may vary.
  6. Click OK two times, and then restart the client computer.

Method 2: Configure an exception and open the port in the Windows Firewall Control Panel

  1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. On the Exceptions tab, click Add Port, type a name and the port number for the port you want to add to the Exception list.
  3. Click TCP, click Change Scope, click a scope option, and then click OK two times.
  4. On the Exceptions tab, click to select the check box for the exception that you created in step 2, and then click OK.
Note If you install Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 with the Advanced Open File Option, you must open port 10000 on the client computer.
