The Application Center 2000 client snap-in does not display correct health monitor information in Windows XP Service Pack 2

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to an application server by using Microsoft Application Center 2000 client snap-in on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), the health monitor information is not displayed correctly. When you expand the tree view for the application server, you expect to see the following list:
  • Actions
  • Data Group
  • Non-Syncrhronized Monitors
  • Sample Monitors
  • Synchronized Monitors
Instead, only the following item appears:
  • Actions

CAUSE

By default, when you install the Windows XP SP2, it turns on the Windows Firewall. When you connect to an application server that is using the Application Center 2000 snap-in, the application server cannot connect to your computer to display the health monitor information if the Windows Firewall is turned on.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, open TCP port 445. To do this, follow these steps.

Important When you open ports in your firewall, you increase the chance that other programs may gain access to your computer through those ports. Because of this, we recommend that you carefully consider your network security requirements before you open ports in your firewall. You may want to open the port only for the time that you are using the program and close the port when you are not using the program.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click the Exceptions tab, and then click Add Port.
  3. In the Add a Port dialog box, type 445 in the Port number box, and then click TCP.
  4. Type TCP Port 445 in the Name box, and then click OK two times.
