The "Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled" policy setting is changed from Disabled to Not Configured after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), you set the Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations policy setting to Disabled. However, after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you the Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations policy setting is changed to Not Configured.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Windows XP SP2 introduces a new Wuau.adm administrative template. The Wuau.adm template handles the Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations policy.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, set the Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations policy setting back to Disabled after you upgrade Windows XP SP1 to Service Pack 2 (SP2). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Update.
  3. In the right pane, double-click Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations.
  4. On the Setting tab, click Disabled.
