Error message when you install the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server: "The installation program was unable to connect to the database"

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Microsoft SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, the installation fails. You receive the following error message:
The installation program was unable to connect to the database using the provided user name and password. Please verify that the provided information is correct, or select Cancel to abort the installation process.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The Administrator account or the password is not valid.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Security Authentication is configured for Windows only. Authentication must be configured for SQL Server and for Windows.

RESOLUTION

Verify that the Administrator account and the password are correct. If this problem still occurs, follow these steps:
  1. In SQL Server, start Enterprise Manager.
  2. Expand Microsoft SQL Servers, expand SQL Server Group, and then expand server_name.
  3. Right-click server_name, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Security tab.
  5. For Authentication, click to select SQL Server and Windows.
  6. Click OK to commit changes.
