Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. A computer is running an instance of the original release version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. The computer is also running an instance of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2). You install SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on the instance of the original release version of SQL Server 2005. In this scenario, you receive the following error message when the Setup program installs the Setup Support Files component:
A recently applied update, KB913090, failed to install.
Additionally, the following error message is logged in the Redist9_Hotfix_KB913090_SqlSupport.msp.log file:
SqlSupport.msp is not digitally signed.

Workaround

To work around this problem, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Save the value data of the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Bootstrap\MSIRefCount\Uninstall
  2. In Control Panel, use the "Add or Remove Programs" item to remove the Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files component.

    When you remove the Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files component , you receive the following warning message:
    Warning 26002. The following products(s) is dependent on Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files
    If you receive this warning message, click Yes to continue.
  3. Open the following folder on the installation media of the original release version of SQL Server 2005:
    Tools\Setup
  4. Double-click the SqlSupport.msi file.
  5. After you install the SQL Server Setup Support Files component, restore the value data for the registry entry that you saved in step 1.
  6. Start to install SQL Server 2005 SP1.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
