SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) on a Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer that has the Microsoft Exchange Server Intelligent Message Filter v2 installed, the Exchange 2003 SP2 installation fails. Additionally, you receive the following message:
Service Pack 2 for Exchange Server 2003 includes an updated version of the Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter. An earlier version of the Exchange Intelligent Message Filter has been detected on this system and this earlier version must be uninstalled before applying Service Pack 2
However, when you try to locate the Intelligent Message Filter on the Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer, the Intelligent Message Filter is not listed in the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel.

CAUSE

Typically, this issue occurs when you use a post-Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installation source to install Exchange 2003 on the Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer. Additionally, the Intelligent Message Filter may not appear in the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel when you log on by using an account that differs from the account that was used to install the Intelligent Message Filter.
