SYMPTOMS

After you delete a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) reservation on a DHCP server that is running Windows Server 2003, the client computer that held the reservation is not resolvable by using Domain Name System (DNS).

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The DHCP server is running Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • DHCP reservations are configured to dynamically update A records and PTR records in DNS. Therefore, the DHCP server registers both the A records and the PTR records for the client computer.
  • DHCP reservations are configured to discard A records and PTR records when the lease is deleted. Therefore, the DHCP server removes the DNS records that it has registered for the client computer when the lease is deleted.
  • The reserved client computer holds an active lease.
In this scenario, if you delete a reservation, the corresponding lease is also deleted. Therefore, the A records and the PTR records for the client computer are also removed, and the client computer is not resolvable by using DNS.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, trigger a DNS update by renewing the IP address on the client computer.
