SYMPTOMS

When you install a 32-bit version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on a server that is running an X64 version of SQL Server 2005 with Service Pack 2 (SP2), you receive the following error message during the installation of the SQL Server 2005 Database Engine:

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a file that is shared between the 32-bit version of SQL Server 2005 and the X64 version of SQL Server 2005 is not updated correctly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, install the Setup Support Files component from the 32-bit version of SQL Server 2005 SP2. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Download the 32-bit version of SQL Server 2005 SP2.
  2. Double-click the SQL Server 2005 SP2 package.
  3. On the Feature Selection page, select the Setup Support Files check box.
  4. Clear other check boxes if they are selected.
  5. Follow the rest of the installation steps.
After you install the Setup Support Files component, you can install the 32-bit version of SQL Server 2005.
