Error message when you try to run reports in System Center Operations Manager 2007: "Cannot open Database 'OperationsManagerDW' requested by the login"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to run reports from the Operations console in Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007, you receive the following error message:
Cannot open Database "OperationsManagerDW" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'UserAccount'
Note By default, the name of the reporting database that is installed is "OperationsManagerDW." The name of the database may differ depending on the name that is provided during reporting installation.

This problem occurs when the Root Management Server (RMS) is installed on clustered servers, and the SDK account that is used on each cluster node is different.

CAUSE

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the System Center Operations Manager 2007 Reporting service.
  • The RMS is installed on clustered servers.
In this scenario, the passive cluster node SDK accounts are not added as permissions to the OperationsManagerDW database. Therefore, the passive node cannot access the reports from the reporting database (OperationsManagerDW) when there are failovers. This situation occurs because the SDK account (This includes the Local System account) on the currently active node differs from the SDK account on the other nodes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the same domain account as the SDK account on all nodes of the RMS cluster during the RMS cluster nodes setup. However, you may have to use different SDK accounts on each node of the cluster. In this case, give access to all the SDK accounts that are used to the OperationsManagerDW database after you install the SCOM reporting service.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
