SYMPTOMS

In Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Vista, Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 may experience access violations or memory corruption if a filter module uses the IHttpRequest::SetUrl API.

CAUSE

IIS 7.0 may not update some pointers correctly in the HTTP_REQUEST structure after a call to the IHttpRequest::SetUrl API. This can cause other code that uses this structure to fail.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The IIS core module APIs expose some http.sys structures to the module code. The HTTP_COOKED_URL structure is one of the structures. When a server that is running the IIS module uses the IHttpRequest::SetUrl API, not all parts of the HTTP_COOKED_URL structure are updated. Code that relies on these pointers would fail. This occurs because these pointers address a contiguous block of memory that includes several in-box IIS modules and several currently shipping non-operating system modules. The failures could range from a simple access violation to memory corruption to an exploitable buffer abuse.
