SYMPTOMS

During the shutdown process, a Windows Server 2003 SP2-based domain controller incorrectly returns the following error code to all Kerberos requests:
KDC_ERR_C_PRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN
Applications or services may interpret the error code to mean "no such user." Therefore, an application or service may incorrectly deny user authentication requests.

For example, the incorrect error code causes the BizTalk service to crash. The error also forces the service to be restarted every time that the Windows Server 2003-based domain controller is shut down.

RESOLUTION

A hotfix is available to resolve this problem. After you apply this hotfix, the Windows Server 2003 SP2-based domain controller returns the following error code if the domain controller receives requests during the shutdown process:
KDC_ERR_SVC_UNAVAILABLE
