You may notice an action item that prompts you to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials. You may receive the action item through the Microsoft Security Essentials user interface, through a pop-up window, or through a "toast" message.
Additionally, when you view Microsoft Update you may be offered an "Important" or "High priority" download to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials in Microsoft Security Essentials Client update package - KB2254596.

If you are running a beta version of Microsoft Security Essentials, we encourage you to upgrade to the latest version. By upgrading now, you help make sure that you have continuous protection against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.
This issue occurs when you use an earlier or unsupported version of Microsoft Security Essentials such as version 1.0.1407.0, 1.0.1500.0, 1.0.1610.0, 1.0.1961.0, or an earlier version.
To resolve this issue, upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials. By upgrading, you help make sure that you have continuous protection against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. To do this, use one of the following methods:
- Click the Microsoft Security Essentials Home tab, and then click Upgrade Now.
- On the Help menu, click Upgrade Microsoft Security Essentials.
- On the Microsoft Security Essentials home page, click Free Download to install the latest version. To do this, go to the following Microsoft website:

To determine which version of Microsoft Security Essentials that you are running, click
About Microsoft Security Essentials on the
Help menu. The
Help menu is found in the upper-right corner of the
Microsoft Security Essentials Home tab. You can find the Microsoft Security Essentials version number under
System Information.
If you are not running Microsoft Security Essentials and want to install the latest version, follow these steps:
- Click the following link to download Microsoft Security Essentials: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials
- If a File Download notification appears, click Run.
- If a User Account notification appears, click Yes.
- Follow the steps to validate your copy of Windows and install Microsoft Security Essentials.
