SYMPTOMS

A computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 does not respond to 802.1X authentication requests after an initial authentication attempt fails. Therefore, either the user loses the network connection or the user is assigned to the wrong virtual local area network (VLAN).

This issue affects the following two scenarios.

Scenario 1

When one DOT3SVC authentication attempt is successful, and then the following reauthentication attempts fail one time, the network interface cannot recover from the authentication failure. Additionally, the network interface does not respond to the reauthentication request if 802.1X authentication is enforced. Eventually, the network interface is blocked by the 802.1X switch. Therefore, the computer loses the network connection.

NoteWhen you check the status of the network interface, you see that the authentication attempt was successful and that the network interface has a valid IP address.

Scenario 2

You resume the operating system from sleep or from hibernation. The operating system does not respond to the 802.1X reauthentication requests if the authentication instance has a UI request. Therefore, the authentication attempt fails because of a time-out.

CAUSE

The DOT3SVC service updates the AutoConfig value with the session handle ID when DOT3SVC authentication succeeds. Additionally, the session handle ID increases by 1. All authentication failure events and reauthentication events that come from the miniport or from the network do not match the session ID. Therefore, these events are dropped.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Windows 7" section.
