Symptoms

The Norman virus engine is unable to update itself on a computer that is running Antigen 8.0 for Microsoft Exchange, Antigen 8.0 for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, Antigen 8.0 for IM, or Antigen 8.0 for SMTP Gateways. This problem occurs because the Norman virus engine cannot determine the uncompressed size of the update. Therefore, the Norman virus engine creates an additional engine folder in the Norman directory. This additional engine folder is named NormanEngineNew. Additionally, Antigen can no longer incorporate Norman's latest update into its Scanner Updates.

  1. Contact Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) to obtain the hotfix that is appropriate for the version of Antigen 8.0 that you are running.
  2. Stop any related services for the version of Antigen 8.0 that you are running. For example, stop the Exchange service, the IIS service, the SMTP service, the SharePoint service, or the IM service, as appropriate.
  3. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the Antigen 8.0 installation folder. For example, locate the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Sybari Software\Antigen for Exchange
  4. Rename the GetEngineFiles.exe file as "GetEngineFiles.old."
  5. Copy the updated GetEngineFiles.exe file that you received from Microsoft CSS to the Antigen 8.0 installation folder.
  6. In the Norman Engine folder, delete the NormanEngineNew folder.
  7. Restart the related services for the version of Antigen 8.0 that you are running. For example, restart the Exchange service, the IIS service, the SMTP service, the SharePoint service, or the IM service, as appropriate.
  8. You can download a new scheduled update. This new update enables the Norman Engine to update correctly.
Note Even though this problem occurs in the Norman Data Defense Engine, all virus engines are potentially vulnerable to this problem. Therefore, we recommend that all customers who are running Antigen 8.0 apply this update as a proactive measure.
