You Receive a LIST Command Error Message When You Connect to an Exchange Server

SYMPTOMS

If you set up a Microsoft Exchange e-mail account and try to connect to the Microsoft Exchange server, you receive the following error message:
The server returned the following error: LIST command received in invalid state

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you have configured your Exchange e-mail account to use a password when you receive e-mail messages.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  2. Click the Exchange account, and then click Edit.
  3. In Receiving Mail, click click here for advanced receiving options, and then click to clear the Always Use Secure Password check box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Close the Accounts window.
