When you view the Asset Management reports in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3), the Asset Management reports contain information about obsolete computers.
This behavior occurs because the Asset Management reports in SMS 2003 SP3 include all computers in the SMS database or in the specified collection. This may include computers that are marked as obsolete. Computers that are marked as obsolete are routinely removed from the SMS database when the automatic deletion schedule occurs. However, if the automatic deletion schedule has not occurred, the obsolete computer information remains in the SMS database.
To work around this behavior, you can use one of the following methods, depending on the reports that you are using.
For reports that are named License 1A and License 1B
For reports that are named License 1A and License 1B, you can create a collection for all computers that are marked as obsolete. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, point to Programs, click Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
Expand Site Database (<SiteCode-SiteName>, right-click Collections, click New, and then click Collection.
In the Collection Properties dialog box, type a name for your collection. For example, type All Obsolete Systems.
Click the Membership Rules tab.
Click the Create Direct Membership Rule Wizard icon.
On the Welcome to the Create Direct Membership Rule Wizard page, click Next.
On the Search for Resources page, follow these steps:
In the Resource class list, click System Resource.
In the Attribute name list, click Obsolete.
In the Value box, type 1.
Click Next.
Leave the Search in this collection box blank, and then click Next.
After the resource information is returned, click Select All, click Next, and then click Finish
Run the Asset Management report named License 1D - Microsoft License Ledger Products on a Specific Computer for each computer that was returned in the "All Obsolete Systems" collection that you created earlier.
Note the number of each Licensed Product installed for each computer.
In reports License 1A and License 1B, you can decrement the license counts by the number gathered in step 11.
For all other reports
For all other reports, you can create a collection for all computers that are not marked as obsolete.
For example, type All Non-Obsolete Systems.
In the Value box, type 0.
Click Next.
Leave the Search in this collection box blank, and then click Next.
After the resource information is returned, click Select All, click Next, and then click Finish
Run the Asset Management report that you want, and then use the new collection that you created as the Collection ID parameter.
