SYMPTOMS

The Uninstall Internet Explorer 4.0 and all its components option may not be available using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. For IE 4.0, the only option may be to add a component or to add the desktop update.

For IE 5, the only option may be to add a component or to Repair Internet Explorer.

CAUSE

Internet Explorer 4.x and 5.x has an option to delete the Setup files and backup information that is necessary to uninstall Internet Explorer. If you use this option, there is no way to uninstall Internet Explorer 4.x and 5.x and you may be unable to use the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs applet to uninstall the prevous version of Internet Explorer."

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior for Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98, manually uninstall Internet Explorer. For information about how to do so, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

You are upgrading a version of Internet Explorer 4.0 in which the uninstall feature has been disabled. If you choose to continue, Setup will update your PC with the newer version, but the uninstall feature will remain disabled.
