Summary

Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Outlook 2002. This update includes fixes to warn you when you are approaching the 2 gigabyte (GB) size limit of Personal folder and Offline Store files (.pst, .ost), along with fixes for other issues listed later in this article. This update also includes fixes developed from Office Watson bug submissions.

This article describes how to download and install the Microsoft Outlook 2002 Update: October 4, 2001.

Note This Public Update is part of the Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1), but for your convenience the Public Update also is available individually, as described in the "More Information" section of this article. If you already applied Office XP SP-1, you do not need to apply this Public Update. How to Download and Install the Update

Client Update

If you installed Office XP from a CD-ROM, you have two options:

Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically install all of the latest updates that includes all available Service Packs and Public Updates.
Install only the Public Update by using the steps described later.

Both options require that you have your Office XP CD-ROM available throughout the installation process.

Office Product Updates

To have the Office Product Updates Web site detect the required updates that you must install on your computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended updates for your approval. Click Start Installation to complete the process.

Install Only Outlook 2002 Update

Follow these steps to download and install the client update:

Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
Click Save to save the olk1004.exe file to the selected folder.
In Windows Explorer, double-click olk1004.exe.
If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
Insert your Office XP CD-ROM when you are prompted to do so, and then click OK.
When you receive a message that indicates that the update was applied successfully, click OK.

Note After you install the public update, you cannot remove it.

Administrative Update

If you installed Office XP from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative public update and deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, follow these steps to download the administrative update:

Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
Click Save to save the olk1004a.exe file to your desktop.
In Windows Explorer, double-click the olk1004a.exe file.
Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
In the Please type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type C:\olk1004a, and then click OK.
Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.
You must now apply the six .msp files in the C:\OLK1004a folder.

To apply the first file, click Start and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box (all in one line)

msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p C:\OLK1004a\outlook_admin.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1

where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and where MSI file is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi). Click OK.

After this command is finished, run the following five additional commands similarly:

msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p C:\OLK1004a\OLKINTL_admin.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1

msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p C:\OLK1004a\outlcm_admin.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1

msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p C:\OLK1004a\outlctl_admin.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1

msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p C:\OLK1004a\outlmime_admin.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1

msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p C:\OLK1004a\pstprx32_admin.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1
To deploy the update to an existing client installation, click Start and then click Run on the client computer. Type the following command in the Open box (all in one line)

msiexec /i admin path\MSI file REINSTALL=OUTLOOKNonBootFiles,OUTLOOKFiles,OutlookImportExportFiles REINSTALLMODE=vomus /q

where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and where MSI file is the updated .msi database package for Office XP on the administrative image (for example, ProPlus.msi).

Note All the features following the REINSTALL property are case-sensitive.

Some Signed Messages Open Slowly

If you receive an invalid certificate on a signed message, Outlook may open the message slowly as it tries to download the correct certificate.

New Messages Are Duplicated If the Folder Is Switched During Synchronization with Hotmail

If you switch to a Hotmail folder while that folder is being synchronized by a background operation, new messages may be duplicated in the local PST (but not on the Hotmail server). If you delete the duplicate messages, the data is lost.

Personal Folders (.pst) File Opened in Windows Explorer Corrupts Data

If you open a Personal Folders (.pst) file while in Windows Explorer and associate the file to "Open With Outlook," the .pst file may become corrupted.

Support Added for New S/MIME Certification Extension

Support has been added for a new extension to certificates that specifies the S/MIME capabilities of the client.

Moving Items Between Outlook Folders Can Take Up to 30 Seconds

If you drag items between folders with an Exchange Server and a Hotmail account in the same e-mail profile, Outlook may stop responding (hang). This only occurs if the Hotmail account is in the e-mail profile.

SPA Does Not Prompt for Credentials and Message NDRs

When you connect through a different ISP than the one that requires SPA, SPA does not prompt you for credentials, and then you receive an NDR.

When you send a digitally encrypted message by using Outlook 2000 SR-1, and Outlook is configured to the option "Keep Personal Address in" a .pab file, Outlook fails to find the recipient's certificate. This results in the following error message:
