SYMPTOMS

When a remote access client dials in and connects to a Windows XP-based computer that is configured as a remote access server and that is running Routing Information Protocol (RIP) Listener, you may find that the route table is not updated as expected with new route information.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Windows XP remote access server computer is configured to use a static pool of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to assign to remote access clients. In this situation, the RIP messages that are sent from the client are not processed correctly, and new route information is not added to the route table.

RESOLUTION

MORE INFORMATION

When you install RIP Listener, your computer can learn other routes on the network by listening to RIP messages and then by adding these routes to the route table. This feature listens for and updates route information that is sent by routers that use RIPv1. To install RIP Listener and enable RIP listening, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  3. Click Networking Services (but do not click to select the check box), and then click Details.
  4. Click to select the RIP Listener check box, and then click OK.
  5. In the Windows Component Wizard, click Next.
  6. When you are prompted, insert the Windows XP CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click OK.
  7. Follow the instructions on the remaining pages of the wizard to install RIP Listener.
