FIX: Windows Media Player 9 Series May Not Be Able to Connect Through an Authenticated Proxy 2.0 Proxy ServerArticle ID: 830414 - View products that this article applies to. SYMPTOMSWhen you try to stream content by using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) protocol through an authenticated Microsoft Proxy 2.0 proxy server, the client may experience one of the following symptoms:
CAUSEThis problem occurs because the Proxy 2.0 proxy server sends multiple "Proxy-Authenticate" headers. Although Media Player can process multiple authentication schemes, it only looks at the first authenticate header in certain scenarios. Because it does not understand the header, it never rolls over to the others in the list. The Media Player then resends the original request to the origin server. The Proxy 2.0 proxy server then returns the same authentication message that describes the authentication methods that it understands to the client. At this point, the client may be stuck in an endless loop. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
